Open Opportunities

Compost Creator

Hiring Now!

Carter’s Compost is looking for a reliable, hard-working individual to join our team with a startup mentality to help us make our corner of the world a better place. You will be the muscle behind our food scrap collection, driving our all-electric pickup vehicle (we call it the Peel Mobile!) to pick up residential buckets and commercial carts in and around Traverse City and surrounding towns, as well as building and maintaining compost piles.

This is a physical, independent role where you can get your weekly workout in while doing something great for the environment. No prior composting experience is required—we are excited to train anyone who joins the crew! There is room for this role to change and grow as you take over these key responsibilities. We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

Job Details

  • Pay: $25.00 per hour, after training

  • Schedule: We will work with you on a flexible weekly schedule, but all work hours will take place Monday through Friday.

  • Hours: Starting at 10 hours per week, with the potential to work up to 20 hours per week.

  • Benefits: None included at this time.

  • Location: Traverse City, MI, and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the Peel Mobile safely on designated residential and commercial pickup routes.

  • Collect and empty residential food scrap buckets and commercial compost carts.

  • Manage general compost piles at various sites using tractors and other equipment.

  • Monitor pile health by taking temperatures and recording data regularly.

  • Work independently to complete routes and pile maintenance efficiently.

  • Maintain clean collection equipment and vehicles.

Job Requirements

  • A clean and safe driving record, and comfort driving a large van in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift heavy buckets and carts repeatedly throughout your shift.

  • Ability or willingness to learn to operate tractors and other composting machinery.

  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions and navigating varied traffic situations.

  • Comfort working in sometimes smelly environments (it is compost, after all!).

  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to work with little direct supervision.

  • Composting understanding and experience is a plus, but not required.

Perks

  • Great pay at $25/hour with paid on-the-job training.

  • Get paid to get a great workout every week.

  • High growth potential to help shape the role as the business expands.

  • Being part of a growing company early in its journey.
