Our Work

Since spring 2022, Carter's Compost has shifted gears (yes the bike pun is intended!) under new ownership, leading to an increase in food scrap collection and the production of rich compost. Over the years, we've ramped up our collections from 6,000 pounds in 2022 to over 50,000 pounds in 2025! Our subscribers, affectionately known as Compost Champions, are essential to the future of Carter's and our wonderful community. Join us in reaching our goals to divert more and enrich local soil!

Expand Compost Access

In addition to residential curbside pickups in downtown Traverse City, Carter's Compost also offers various drop-offs sites as well as commercial pickups. We want to give community members and businesses more opportunities to compost their food scraps with ease!

Focus on Partnerships

Growing our capacity to compost more food scraps comes through amazing partnerships with local organizations with the same vision for our region: keep things green and blue and vibrant through smaller landfills and better soils.

Grow with Integrity

We are a proud carbon-negative company, sequestering more carbon from the atmosphere than we emit through using pedal-powered pickups, an electric pickup vehicle, and a lot of human muscle and grit! We take the extra step to ensure the choices we make have a positive impact on the community around us.

Educate and Share

True to our roots, we believe in the power of the young people in our community. We believe that being involved in learning opportunities with kids and adults will pave the path to a green future.
