Why Compost?
Impact of Food in Landfills
Did you know that FOOD is the #1 item by weight we throw in the trash! Food waste in landfills is the #3 largest source of methane produced after only oil & gas and livestock. That methane equates to 6% of total emissions in the USA, which is double the entire airline industry.
Local Goals
In Northwest Lower Michigan, Carter's and other organizations aim to reduce the amount of organic materials going to landfills by 33% by 2030. That is 25,000 tons of valuable resources per year that we, as a community, can put to better use.
The Bigger Picture
What you are doing matters!
Skipping the trash and composting food scraps sequesters carbon from the atmosphere by placing fewer trucks on the roads, keeps less weight on the roads and reduces organic materials in landfills creating methane gas.
Additionally, by composting locally we are working together to regenerate Michigan soil by returning nutrients back to our soils, improve moisture retention and produce more nutritious and tasty food in our region.
